I was invited to the Bilderberg conference this year — embarrassed I hadn’t known anything about it before, and more embarrassed I hadn’t known anything about the controversy around it.

But having been there, and done that, I confess I don’t get the outrage.

It’s a conference. There’s no agreements, or planning, or anything beyond people speaking in panels, and people asking questions (or “asking questions”) of the speakers. Or at least that I saw. (Sure, it might have been that between 10pm and 8am (the only time we had off) there were secret meetings held by the rulers of the world. Suffice it, they didn’t invite me to them if they indeed were happening.)

The venue was nice, but not opulent. The topics were wide ranging. There was a great panel on Syria and on medical research, but every other panel was interesting as well. The audience wasn’t representative of the world, but it was mixed. There were strong critics; there were views expressed that most there didn’t agree; and there were more of that than came just from me.

True, the meeting is conducted with Chatham House Rules, meaning while the ideas expressed can be shared, the identity of speaker can’t be shared. Again, I don’t get the outrage about this. I’ve been to many conferences with the same rules, and many times I’ve recognized why they make sense. Especially if you’re someone in authority — CEO of a company or minister of a government — while you should be held accountable for your words, it’s fair your words not be taken out of context. Or at least, I get why people would only choose to participate if they were confident of this modest protection.

There’s a business model to protest. I get that. There’s value in rallying the people. But here was yet another time I thought: if only we could get this sort of passion directed against something real, or something that mattered. Outrage about people meeting to hear at least some ideas they don’t agree with doesn’t seem to me to be the highest and best use of outrage.

Na jó, egy gyönyörű sztori. Emlékszem hogy Balogh Ákossal leveleztem anno 2010 elején a valasztas.hu honlapjáról, mert felkért mint szakértőt hogy röviden írjak az akkor 17 millió Ft-ért elkészült fejlesztésekről.

Ha tudtam volna hogy Balogh Ákos fél évvel azelőtt eljátszotta ugyanezt kicsiben…

2.35 milliós fejlesztési költség + havi 190 üzemeltetési díj 2009-10-ben egy ILYEN honlap esetében az ugyanaz a kategória mint ahogy a valasztas.hu-nál is brutálisan túlszámlázták az összegeket.

Szóval kedves Balogh Ákos, te ugyanaz a kategória vagy mint az összes többi kormányzati és önkormányzati korrupciót megvalósító bűnöző, maximum nem akkora szinten, viszont Simicska legalább nem áll ki pontifikálni arról hogy hol húzódik az erkölcsi mérce, meg nem tetteti függetlennek és újságírónak magát.

természetesen nem, ott volt az idézőjel. Sajnos úgy tűnik a tisztelt újságíró hölgynek, és az elszánt kerékpárosnak ez már túl nagy szellemi kihívás volt.

Na, csak hogy egy picit tisztába tegyük, ha már a telefonban csak az ügyvédedről üvöltöztél.

Én nem ismerlek, főleg nem tudom, mi a problémád velem. Tomcattel a cikk megjelenése óta nem beszéltem, ma egy akkori emailjére válaszoltam, amikor megkérdeztem, mi bajotok egymással, hogy nekem ehhez már megint közöm kell, hogy legyen. Ezután jött ki a poszt, amihez semmi közöm. Nem ismerek sem Szalait, sem Vejmelkát, főleg nem akarom, hogy a nevem ilyen balhék mellett szerepljen. Ezért törölték a posztot.

Hogy téged most kirúgnak? Nem értem. Hogy feljelentesz? Miért is? Hogy felvetted a telefonbeszélgetést és bizonyítékod van? Miről?! Szivesen meghívlak egy kávéra, hogy megbeszéljük. A telefonszámomat már tudod, habár én a te nevedet még mindig nem.

Annyi közöd van, hogy te készítettél egy alákérdezős, felszopó szagú interjút a Mandínerbe azzal az úrral, aki már fél éve háziőrizetben van (csoportos garázdasággal vádolják, a térfigyelő kamerák felvételei szerint a többi úgynevezett pesti bringással összerugdaltak egy földön fekvő csövest), aki a jelek szerint nem tud vagy nem akar elszámolni az “adományokkal”, aki a hunhíren magát nemzeti érzelmű (azaz magyarul radijobb) civilként fényezi, aki a videók szerint éjjelente kisgyerekes családokat zargat, üvöltve cigányozva és fenyegetőzve, akit nem rég ítéltek el első fokon uszításért (arra buzdított, hogy menjünk le a sarokra és üssük le az első cigányt), aki ráküldte tvrtkora a brigádját, akik annak facebook oldalán zsidó kurvázták a süket weisz fanni nevű kislányt, akinek annyi volt a bűne, hogy el mert indulni ugyanazon a pályázaton, mint a kis barátod.

mindössze annyit írtam a bejegyzésbe, hogy a mandiner és kiváló szerzője kicsit mást gondol az alanyról, mint az akitől IDÉZTEM. Igen, azt a hosszú szart nem én írtam, ott volt az idézőjel is. Ezt a facebookos bejegyzést egyébként nem azért kellett volna töröltetned, mert nehogy közöd legyen hozzá, hanem mert az elejétől a végéig hazugság az egész. A telefonban elismerted, hogy te mondtad ezeket a Tolvajkergetők vezetőjének, a beszélgetést rögzítettem, szerintem lesz alkalmad meghallgatni.

Köszi az életveszélyes fenyegetéseket, amiket kaptam a kis akciód után, anniyra azért nem vagyok beszarva, nem az első alkalom, hogy a tokás védenced rám uszítja az embereit, bár annak örülnék, ha ebben az esetben a mamámat legalább békénhagynák ezek a bátor pofák.

Kávézzon veled a rosztovi rém, a telefonban pedig bemutatkoztam, az nem az én hibám, hogy még egy nevet is képtelen vagy megjegyezni.

Ebben a történetben már rögtön az is szürreális persze, hogy az ismert előzmények után a Mandineren hájoplták Tomcatet.

Having labored as a police reporter in the days before the Patriot Act, I can assure all there has always been a stage before the wiretap, a preliminary process involving the capture, retention and analysis of raw data. It has been so for decades now in this country. The only thing new here, from a legal standpoint, is the scale on which the FBI and NSA are apparently attempting to cull anti-terrorism leads from that data. But the legal and moral principles? Same old stuff.

Allow for a comparable example, dating to the early 1980s in a place called Baltimore, Maryland. There, city detectives once began to suspect that major traffickers were using a combination of public pay phones and digital pagers to communicate their business. And they took their suspicions to a judge and obtained court orders — not to monitor any particular suspect, but to instead cull the dialed numbers from the thousands and thousands of calls made to and from certain city pay phones.

Think about it. There is certainly a public expectation of privacy when you pick up a pay phone on the streets of Baltimore, is there not? And certainly, the detectives knew that many, many Baltimoreans were using those pay phones for legitimate telephonic communication. Yet, a city judge had no problem allowing them to place dialed-number recorders on as many pay phones as they felt the need to monitor, knowing that every single number dialed to or from those phones would be captured. So authorized, detectives gleaned the numbers of digital pagers and they began monitoring the incoming digitized numbers on those pagers — even though they had yet to learn to whom those pagers belonged. The judges were okay with that, too, and signed another order allowing the suspect pagers to be “cloned” by detectives, even though in some cases the suspect in possession of the pager was not yet positively identified.

All of that — even in the less fevered, pre-Patriot Act days of yore — was entirely legal. Why?

Because they aren’t listening to the calls.

It’s at that point, people, that law enforcement requires a full-throated argument of probable cause. It’s at that point that privacy rights must be seriously measured against the legitimate investigate needs of law enforcement. And it’s at that point that the potential for authoritarian overreach becomes significant.

I know it’s big and scary that the government wants a data base of all phone calls. And it’s scary that they’re paying attention to the internet. And it’s scary that your cell phones have GPS installed. And it’s scary, too, that the little box that lets you go through the short toll lane on I-95 lets someone, somewhere know that you are on the move. Privacy is in decline around the world, largely because technology and big data have matured to the point where it is easy to create a net that monitors many daily interactions. Sometimes the data is valuable for commerce — witness those facebook ads for Italian shoes that my wife must endure — and sometimes for law enforcement and national security. But be honest, most of us are grudging participants in this dynamic. We want the cell phones. We like the internet. We don’t want to sit in the slow lane at the Harbor Tunnel toll plaza.

The question is not should the resulting data exist. It does. And it forever will, to a greater and greater extent. And therefore, the present-day question can’t seriously be this: Should law enforcement in the legitimate pursuit of criminal activity pretend that such data does not exist.

I don’t know all the choices Snowden had about his place of refuge. Maybe he thought this was his only real option. But if Snowden thinks, as some of his comments seem to suggest, that he has found a bastion of freer speech, then he is ill-informed; and if he knowingly chose to make his case from China he is playing a more complicated game.
